About Us

The Petfood Consumer Rights Council is a first-of-its-kind animal welfare organization.

What Makes the PCRC Different From Other Animal Welfare Groups?

A Source of Funding For Better Nutritional Science Research

Since its inception, the pet food industry has been the dominant source of funding for companion animal nutrition research. We believe that arrangement is fundamentally broken and we aim to fix it. Our grants are funded entirely by individual pet owners and go exclusively to the projects that matter most to our members. Our work enables research into subjects that matter to pet owners, not industry.

Unbiased Information, Not Industry Propaganda

Ever feel like you don’t know whose information to trust when it comes to your pet’s health and wellbeing? We promote rigorous, evidence-based knowledge about topics that matter most to our members, compiled and vetted entirely by leaders whose expertise and impartiality are judged by member vote. We aspire to be the world’s most trusted and reliable source of companion animal nutritional science information.

One Member, One Vote

We only accept small-dollar donations from individual pet owners. And all of our members get an equal say in how we choose our leaders, distribute funds, and choose new initiatives. That means that our members control our operations, not industry.

Our Revolutionary Governance Model

Rigorous conflicts-of-interest disclosures are required for all director and officer candidates. Directors are chosen entirely by member vote. All new officers, strategic plans, and key initiatives are subject to member approval.

Real Pet Owners Making a Real Difference

100% of our funding comes from member donations. Members must be individual pet owners, not organizations. We accept donations as small as $5 and no single member may donate more than $1,000 per year. Together, these rules mean that our work is guided by the collective, not a small group of powerful individuals.

A Different Approach

There are countless animal welfare organizations doing good work directly on behalf of companion animals in America. But despite their work (and despite ever-growing annual expenditures on veterinary care and pet products), America’s pets have never been less healthy. Obesity, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, and other chronic health conditions have never been more common. We think a different approach—one focused on helping pets by helping the pet owners—can make a difference.
